About

Jaimie is a lens based interdisciplinary artist. Her work is rooted in place in a spiritual way within the natural world. She explores different themes but the ideas throughout are connection to the universal through nostalgic appeal to a place. There is a comforting solidarity and peaceful longing about the past and a photograph is already in the past. Currently exploring digital with edited and some composited images, she prints the images on archival papers, then further manipulates with hand-coloring, painting, and sometimes encaustics. The results are often described as ethereal.

Jaimie has a long use photography of traditional film and silver gelatin, Cyanotype, Van Dyke, Photograms, photo manipulations, infrared, and other alternative processes. As a fine art major, she began exploring hand tinting, coloring, and painting of photographs with oils, pencils, and water based media while at the university. She used 35 mm, 2 1/4 x 21/4, and toy cameras.

Her work is archival; made with materials for longevity. She has been in many galleries, press, and venues. Pieces are in private, public, and corporate collections.

Where Land Meets Sea

Rushing onto the land, then retreating back into the sea, tides are at once

both constant and ever-changing. The water shapes the shorelines into a

surprising and beautiful place of discovery.  As a Thalassophile, a lover of

the sea: I long for the eternally rhythmic and mesmerizing sounds at the

water’s edge and draw healing strength from their energy.

Wandering the beaches, berms, and beyond, I search for revelations in the

natural shorelines.  I find relationships between the depth of the sea and our deep inner

beliefs. Focusing on natural environments, looking for mystery, I am creating

the visualization of my dreams.

In order to better convey the mystical, I print my images on archival hot

press natural and Japanese papers.  I embellish with hand-colored oil

pencils, pan and stick dry pastels, and other media.  In building layers of

color, I try to reflect the deep and ageless stirrings of the sea.

Color of Light

There is a mesmerization in gazing at the light on the sea. This series doesn’t record the reality as captured by the camera, but combines image and imagination. It is a study of the light and the color of light. Composite photos are blends of reality and imagined dreams. I preserve the colors of light at different times of day and season. Printed on archival paper in limited editions, I further manipulate the vision by hand-coloring with oil pencils and pastels to create personal visual poetry.

Big Skies and Water Dreams

Perhaps because my father had a passion for sailing, I became a Thalassophile. I’m drawn to the seas; the sounds, smells, and sights. I love the things of the sea; the boats, fisherman’s shacks and stages, lighthouses, and the dunes and rocks of the shoreline. During the pandemic, I longed to travel so I created imagery from my dreams. Using the skies from my favorite mountain places in Montana along with my ocean images from the Maritime Provinces I made my fantasy images to soothe my soul. After finishing the composite I printed the image and attached it to a birch substrate. Next I added layers of pigments and wax and fused with heat and fire. I use a variety of pigments which include oil paints, watercolor, egg tempera, inks, pencils, and pastels. The luminosity of the beeswax adds a soft mellow dream-like appearance. Each image is in a limited edition of 15 in two sizes.
